I've heard it can take up to 2 months to get a birth certificate and SSN card after a baby's homebirth. I also hear it takes just 2 weeks after a hospital birth.
Is this true? Is there any way it can be "expedited"? I live overseas so need those documents - plus passport, visa, and additional certification added to the birth certificate to make it readable in my country - in as short a time frame as possible. I'm returning to Oklahoma to give birth, and really want to have a home birth, but need to fly out of the country (completed paperwork in hand!) after about 2 months! Any ideas? Thanks! |

I don't know anything about Oklahoma; I gave birth in Louisiana shortly before moving back up here to be close to family. In Louisiana, even though I had a hospital birth, it took almost 3 months to get the birth certificate, a little less for the SSN card, and they had told me it would be 6-7 months on the birth certificate. Your best bet would probably be to check with the state department that's responsible for issuing the certificates; get the information directly, rather than by word of mouth. They could probably also let you know if there is an expedited application for special circumstances.

I had a homebirth, it didn't take nearly that long. My husband had it expedited. The midwives came back later the same day as the birth for a check up and brought all the stuff we needed to send away. By 3 mos we even had a passport.
